Diamond Colour Guide: D to Z Scale Explained

Diamond colour actually refers to the absence of colour. The most valuable diamonds are completely colourless, while lower grades show increasing amounts of yellow or brown tint. The GIA developed the D-Z colour scale that's used worldwide.
Before GIA standardised the scale, various grading systems used A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, and even Roman numerals - often inconsistently. GIA chose to start at D to avoid any confusion with older systems. There is no A, B, or C grade.
The Colour Scale Breakdown
Colourless: D, E, F - These are the rarest and most expensive diamonds. Under normal viewing conditions, even trained gemologists struggle to distinguish between D, E, and F without comparison stones and controlled lighting.
D - Absolutely colourless. The highest grade. Commands a significant premium.
E - Colourless. Virtually indistinguishable from D except by expert comparison.
F - Colourless. Minute traces of colour detectable only by an expert gemologist under lab conditions.
Best for: Collectors, investors, and buyers who want the absolute best regardless of price.
Near-Colourless: G, H, I, J - This is where the smart money goes. These diamonds face up white to the naked eye, especially when set in jewellery.
G - Near-colourless. Appears white face-up. Excellent value.
H - Near-colourless. Slight warmth only visible when compared directly to D-F stones. The most popular colour grade sold at Diagem.
I - Near-colourless. Slight warmth visible to trained eyes. Great value, especially in yellow gold settings.
J - Near-colourless. Some warmth visible. Best paired with yellow or rose gold settings.
Best for: Most buyers. G-H offers the ideal balance of appearance and value.
Faint Colour: K, L, M - Noticeable warmth. These diamonds can still be beautiful, especially in vintage or yellow gold settings where the warm tone becomes part of the aesthetic.
Very Light to Light: N to Z - Visible yellow or brown tint. Generally not recommended unless the tint is strong enough to qualify as a "fancy colour" diamond (a separate category entirely).
The Price Impact
Using a 1-carat round VS2 Excellent cut as an example, here's roughly how colour affects price:
D colour: baseline (most expensive). G colour: approximately 25-35% less than D. H colour: approximately 30-40% less than D. I colour: approximately 40-50% less than D.
That means choosing H over D on a R100,000 diamond could save you R30,000-R40,000 - for a difference you genuinely cannot see with your eyes.
Which Colour Grade Should You Choose?
For White Gold or Platinum Settings - We recommend G or H. These appear perfectly white against a white metal backdrop.
For Yellow or Rose Gold Settings - H, I, or even J work beautifully. The warm metal tone actually complements a slightly warmer diamond, and you save significantly.
For Maximum Value - H colour is the sweet spot for most buyers. It's the most popular colour grade we sell because it offers white appearance at a meaningful discount from colourless grades.
For the Absolute Best - D or E if budget isn't a constraint. These are genuinely rare stones.
