How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Ring in South Africa?

Let's get this out the way first - the old rule that you should spend three months' salary on an engagement ring was invented by De Beers in the 1930s as a marketing campaign. It has zero basis in reality.

The right amount to spend on an engagement ring is whatever makes sense for your finances. Full stop. Nobody should go into debt for a ring.

Based on what we see at Diagem, most South African buyers spend between R15,000 and R80,000 on an engagement ring (diamond + setting). That's a wide range, and every budget can get you something beautiful.

What Your Budget Gets You

R10,000 - R20,000 - At this budget, a lab-grown diamond is your best bet for impressive size: 0.70-1.00ct round brilliant, VS clarity, excellent cut. A 0.80ct lab-grown diamond looks gorgeous and nobody can tell the difference with the naked eye.

R20,000 - R40,000 - The sweet spot for many South African buyers. Lab-grown: 1.00-1.50ct with excellent specs. Natural: 0.50-0.70ct, VS2 clarity, G-H colour. At this range, you're getting a genuinely impressive diamond.

R40,000 - R80,000 - Premium territory. Lab-grown: 1.50-2.50ct with top-tier specifications. Natural: 0.70-1.00ct with excellent cut and great colour and clarity. A 1-carat natural diamond in this range is the classic engagement ring choice.

R80,000 - R150,000+ - Luxury level. Natural: 1.00-1.50ct with high specifications. Lab-grown: 2.00ct+ with exceptional quality.

How to Maximise Your Ring Budget

Buy the Diamond Separately - Most jewellers mark up loose diamonds heavily when sold as part of a ring. Buy your diamond from a specialist dealer (like us), then have it set by your preferred jeweller. You'll typically save 30-50%.

Consider Diamond Shape - Round brilliant diamonds cost 20-40% more than fancy shapes (oval, cushion, pear) of the same carat weight, because round cuts waste more rough diamond material. An oval often looks larger than a round of the same carat weight too.

Be Strategic with the 4Cs - Cut: Never compromise on this - it's what makes the diamond sparkle. Colour: G or H colour looks white to the eye and saves thousands vs D-E. Clarity: VS2 is the sweet spot - clean to the naked eye at a fraction of VVS pricing. Carat: Consider 0.90ct instead of 1.00ct - visually identical, significantly cheaper.

Lab-Grown for Maximum Impact - If size matters most to your partner, lab-grown gives you 2-3x the carat weight for the same budget as natural. Both are real diamonds, both are certified, both are stunning.

Setting Costs

The diamond is usually 60-80% of the total ring cost. For the setting: Sterling silver: R1,000 - R3,000. 9ct gold: R3,000 - R8,000. 18ct gold: R5,000 - R15,000. Platinum: R8,000 - R20,000.
