How to Read a GIA Diamond Certificate

What Is a GIA Diamond Certificate?

A GIA Diamond Grading Report is an independent assessment issued by the Gemological Institute of America. It is one of the most trusted documents in the diamond industry — an objective, third-party verification of a diamond's quality characteristics. When you buy a Diagem diamond with GIA certification, you receive a copy of this report with your purchase.

The GIA Report Number

Every GIA report has a unique report number printed on the certificate and laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle (the thin edge around the circumference). This number allows you to verify the certificate is authentic at any time using GIA's free online verification tool at gia.edu/report-check.

Shape and Cutting Style

The certificate states the diamond's shape (e.g., Round Brilliant, Oval, Emerald) and cutting style. This confirms what type of stone you are buying.

Measurements

The diamond's physical dimensions in millimetres. For round brilliants, this shows minimum diameter x maximum diameter x depth. For fancy shapes (oval, pear, etc.), it shows length x width x depth. These measurements help verify the diamond matches its description and allow you to estimate its face-up appearance.

Carat Weight

The exact weight of the diamond to the nearest hundredth of a carat (e.g., 1.02 ct). This is measured on a precision scale and is one of the most straightforward entries on the certificate.

Colour Grade

A letter grade from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). GIA grades colour by comparing the stone to a master set of diamonds in a controlled environment. The grade reflects the absence of colour — D is completely colourless, G-H is near-colourless, I-J shows very slight warmth.

Clarity Grade

The clarity grade (FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3) indicates the presence and visibility of inclusions and blemishes. The certificate also includes a clarity plot — a diagram showing the location and nature of any inclusions on the diamond.

Cut Grade (Round Brilliants Only)

For round brilliant diamonds, GIA assigns an overall cut grade: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. This grade reflects the proportions, symmetry, and polish of the stone and is the primary driver of brilliance. Fancy shapes (oval, pear, etc.) do not receive an overall GIA cut grade — cut quality must be assessed from the individual symmetry and polish grades.

Polish and Symmetry

These grades (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor) assess the quality of the surface finish and the precision of the facet arrangement. For maximum brilliance, look for Excellent or Very Good in both categories. At Diagem, our minimum polish and symmetry grades are Good (GD).

Fluorescence

The certificate states the diamond's fluorescence strength (None, Faint, Medium, Strong, Very Strong) and colour (usually blue). See our Fluorescence Guide for a full explanation of how this affects appearance and value.

Verifying Your Certificate

Always verify a GIA certificate is genuine before completing a purchase. Use the GIA Report Check tool at gia.edu/report-check with the report number. All Diagem diamonds with GIA certification can be verified this way.
