Two of the most popular diamond shapes - round and oval - come up in almost every conversation with our customers. Here's how to decide between them.
## Round Brilliant Diamond
The round brilliant is the most classic diamond shape. It has 58 facets, engineered to maximise light return and create the iconic "fire" and brilliance that diamonds are known for.
**Advantages:**
- Maximum brilliance and fire of any diamond shape
- The most researched and optimised cut - when it's excellent, it's unmistakable
- Universally flattering in any setting
- Highest demand = largest market = easiest to resell
**Disadvantages:**
- 20-40% more expensive than fancy shapes of the same carat weight (because more rough diamond is wasted in cutting)
- The "obvious" choice - if you want to stand out, round isn't it
## Oval Diamond
The oval is a brilliant-cut fancy shape with the same faceting structure as round, just stretched into an oval silhouette. It offers exceptional brilliance with a distinctive, elegant appearance.
**Advantages:**
- Appears larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight (the elongated shape covers more of the finger)
- Often 15-25% cheaper than round of equivalent quality
- Flattering on almost every hand type - the length creates a slenderising effect
- Less common = more unique
**Disadvantages:**
- Can show a "bow-tie" effect (dark area in the centre) in poorly cut stones - always inspect the certificate and if possible view the stone
- Less classic; appeal is more individual
## How to Choose
**Choose round if:**
- You want maximum sparkle and classical elegance
- You prioritise brilliance above all else
- You plan to resell the diamond one day
- The setting is a classic solitaire or halo
**Choose oval if:**
- You want a larger-looking diamond for your budget
- You prefer something slightly unconventional but still timeless
- You have an active lifestyle (the elongated shape can make the finger look slimmer)
- You want the same brilliance as round at a lower price
## The "Bow-Tie" Warning
The one technical issue with oval diamonds is the "bow-tie effect" - a dark band across the centre caused by light leaking out. In poorly cut ovals, this can be very visible. In excellent cuts, it's minimal or invisible.
Always check the certificate for cut quality, and if possible view the diamond before purchase. Our team can help you assess this for any stone you're considering.
