Bespoke Diamond Jewellery – Design & Supply Made Simple for South African Shoppers

Most people assume commissioning a bespoke diamond ring is complicated: multiple appointments, confusing decisions, long waits, unclear pricing. The reality at Diagem is significantly simpler. The entire process — from your first message to the ring on your doorstep — is designed to be straightforward, transparent, and manageable even if you've never bought a diamond before.

Here's how it actually works, step by step.

Step 1: First Contact via WhatsApp

Everything starts with a WhatsApp message. You don't need to know exactly what you want. You don't need to know diamond terminology. You just need a rough idea — maybe a reference image you saved on Instagram, a budget range, or a broad style direction ("I want something vintage-inspired" or "minimal and modern").

The initial conversation covers:

This conversation is free, with no commitment required. We do it because it's the fastest way to give you useful information and realistic options.

Step 2: Stone Sourcing

Once we understand what you're looking for, we match your brief against available inventory or source specifically for your commission.

For natural diamonds, we work from our existing stock and direct supplier network. For lab-grown diamonds, we have access to a wide range of IGI-certified stones at varying carat weights, cuts, and grades.

We'll present you with two or three stone options at different price points, each with their GIA or IGI certificate, actual stone images or video, and clear ZAR pricing. You choose, or you ask for alternatives. No pressure to decide quickly.

Key things we handle at this stage:

Step 3: Design and CAD

With a stone confirmed, the design process begins. Diagem uses CAD (computer-aided design) to create a precise design previews of your piece before any metal is touched. You'll see exactly what the finished ring, pendant, or earrings will look like — from multiple angles, in your chosen metal colour.

At this stage you can:

design previews are detailed enough that most buyers don't have significant surprises when the finished piece arrives. What you approve in CAD is what gets made.

Step 4: Manufacturing

Once design is approved and the deposit is received, manufacturing begins. The process:

  1. Metal casting: The CAD file is used to create a precise mould. Metal is cast to the exact specification — band width, thickness, prong dimensions.
  2. Stone setting: The certified diamond is set by an experienced setter. For delicate pavé work or intricate settings, this is where craftsmanship makes the difference between good and exceptional.
  3. Finishing: Polishing, rhodium plating (for white gold), and any engraving is completed.
  4. Quality control: The finished piece is inspected against the CAD spec before packaging. Stone security, finish quality, and measurements are all checked.

Manufacturing typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on complexity. We'll keep you updated on progress.

Step 5: Quality Check and Sign-Off

Before your piece ships, it goes through a final quality check. We photograph the finished piece and send you images for your approval. If anything isn't right — a finishing detail, a prong angle — it gets corrected before dispatch.

This step exists because it's far easier to fix something at the workshop than after it's been couriered to you. We take it seriously.

Step 6: Insured Delivery

Your finished piece is packaged securely in a premium box and dispatched via insured courier to your address anywhere in South Africa. Delivery is fully insured for replacement value — if anything goes wrong in transit (it almost never does, but just in case), you're covered.

Delivery typically takes 1–3 business days once dispatched. You'll receive tracking information and can follow the shipment in real time.

Timeline Summary

Stage Typical Duration
Initial consultation and stone selection 1–5 days
CAD design and approval 3–7 days
Manufacturing 2–4 weeks
QC and dispatch 1–3 days
Delivery 1–3 business days
Total (typical) 4–7 weeks

If you have a hard deadline — an engagement proposal date, a birthday — tell us upfront and we'll tell you honestly whether it's achievable. Rush manufacturing is sometimes possible; we'll let you know.

What Makes This Different From Retail

Retail jewellery stores sell you what they have in stock, with limited customisation. You're choosing from their catalogue, their stone inventory, their price points. The advantage is speed and the ability to see the item physically.

The Diagem bespoke process gives you something genuinely different: a piece designed for you, around a certified stone you've chosen, at factory-direct pricing. The trade-off is lead time. Most buyers who've gone through the process once say they'd never buy off-the-shelf again.

If you're ready to start, the only thing you need to do is send a message.
