What Does a Custom Engagement Ring Actually Cost in South Africa?

The Problem with Most Jewellery Quotes

Most jewellery stores give you a single price. You don't know what portion is the diamond, what's the metal, what's the labour, and what's the shop's margin. That opacity makes it almost impossible to compare quotes meaningfully or to know whether you're getting value.

At Diagem, we've operated as a trade supplier for over 25 years, and when we work with retail clients directly, we price the same way we price for the trade: transparently, component by component. This article breaks down exactly what you're paying for when you commission a custom engagement ring in South Africa, with realistic 2026 price ranges.

Component 1: The Loose Diamond

This is almost always the largest single cost. The price is determined by the four Cs — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — and by whether the stone is natural or lab-grown.

Natural diamonds (GIA or IGI certified): a 1.00ct round brilliant in G/VS1 with an Excellent cut grade currently fetches approximately R65,000–R90,000 at the trade level in South Africa, depending on the specific stone's specifications and current USD/ZAR exchange rates. Going to a 0.70ct equivalent-quality stone can reduce diamond cost to R35,000–R50,000. Top-tier stones (D/IF, 1ct+) begin at R120,000 and climb quickly from there.

Lab-grown diamonds: the same 1.00ct G/VS1 round brilliant lab-grown stone runs approximately R12,000–R22,000 at current market rates. Lab-grown prices have come down substantially over the past three years and continue to fall as production scales. See our lab-grown diamond page for current stock options.

Natural certified diamonds from our own inventory are listed on the natural diamonds page with GIA and IGI certification details.

Component 2: Metal Choice and Weight

The band metal is priced based on the weight of metal used (in grams) multiplied by the current spot price for that metal, plus a casting and refining margin.

Platinum (950) is the most expensive option. Platinum is denser than gold — a typical solitaire band in platinum weighs around 5–7 grams. At current platinum prices (roughly R1,400–R1,600 per gram for jewellery-grade 950 platinum, inclusive of fabrication), a standard solitaire band costs R7,000–R11,200 in metal alone.

18 carat white gold is lighter and less expensive. A comparable band weighs 3–5 grams; at current 18ct white gold rates (approximately R1,100–R1,300 per gram fabricated), band cost runs R3,300–R6,500. Note that white gold requires rhodium plating to maintain its white colour, which needs refreshing every 12–24 months.

18 carat yellow gold is priced similarly to white gold and requires no maintenance plating. Many clients are returning to yellow gold for its warmth and durability — it pairs beautifully with natural-toned diamonds.

18 carat rose gold sits at a similar price point to yellow gold and is currently very popular for its distinctive warm tone.

Component 3: Setting and Craft Fee

This covers the CAD (computer-aided design) drawing, casting, stone setting, and final finishing and polishing. For a straightforward solitaire, expect R2,500–R5,000. A more complex pavé or halo setting — with many smaller diamonds to be individually set — can run R5,000–R9,000 for the craft alone.

If the design requires multiple CAD revisions, additional charges may apply. We typically include two rounds of design revisions in our base craft fee; significant redesigns are quoted separately. This is worth confirming with any jeweller before you commit.

The melee diamonds in a pavé or halo also add cost — small diamonds are priced per carat collectively, and a full pavé halo can add R4,000–R8,000 depending on the number and quality of accent stones.

Component 4: Certification

If your stone already comes with a GIA or IGI certificate, there's nothing extra to pay here. If you supply your own loose stone and want it certified before setting, GIA certification currently costs approximately USD $80–$150 (R1,500–R2,800 at current exchange rates) depending on the size, with a turnaround of three to seven weeks through the standard service. IGI is faster and slightly less expensive. We handle the submission process for our clients.

Component 5: VAT

South African VAT is currently 15% and applies to the total ring value. This is often quoted separately or excluded from initial trade-style quotes, so be sure to confirm whether VAT is included in any price you receive. At Diagem, we always confirm the VAT-inclusive total before any payment is made.

A Real Example: 1ct G/VS1 Natural Diamond Platinum Solitaire

ComponentEstimated Cost (ZAR)
1.00ct G/VS1 Excellent cut, GIA certified natural diamondR72,000
Platinum 950 solitaire band (6g)R9,000
CAD design, casting, setting, finishingR4,000
SubtotalR85,000
VAT (15%)R12,750
TotalR97,750

The same ring at a Sandton retail jeweller would typically cost R130,000–R160,000 or more. The difference is overhead: showroom rent, large staff complements, and retail margins. Diagem sells factory-direct — we're a trade supplier that now works with the public. There's no shop floor between you and the source.

What Affects the Price Most?

The diamond accounts for 70–80% of most ring costs. The single most impactful decision you can make for your budget is choosing between natural and lab-grown, and within natural, choosing slightly below the carat weight threshold (e.g. 0.90ct instead of 1.00ct). Both decisions dramatically reduce cost with minimal visible effect on the final ring.

Metal choice makes a meaningful but secondary difference. Choosing 18ct yellow gold over platinum can save R5,000–R8,000 on a standard solitaire band. It's a real saving, but it won't transform your budget the way a diamond decision will.

💰 A Tip From David

Allocate 70–75% of your budget to the diamond and use the rest for a well-made setting. A beautifully cut diamond in a simple platinum solitaire will always outperform a mediocre diamond in an elaborate setting. Don't let the metalwork eat your diamond budget.
