Diamond certificate and loupe inspection before buying in South Africa

Most diamonds today are sold from a screen. You see a certificate, a stock photo, sometimes a video — and you are asked to commit before you have ever seen the stone. It does not have to work that way. In South Africa you can view the actual diamond, in person, before you decide — natural or lab-grown. This guide covers what to actually check when the stone is in front of you.

Why viewing in person matters

A certificate describes a diamond; it does not show you one. Two stones with identical grading can look noticeably different in the hand — how they return light, how visible an inclusion really is, how the colour reads next to another stone. The certificate is essential, but it is the starting point, not the decision.

What to check when the diamond is in front of you

  1. Match the stone to the certificate. Every certified diamond has a report number, and most have it laser-inscribed on the girdle. Ask to see the inscription under the loupe and match it to the paper. This confirms the stone in your hand is the stone on the certificate.
  2. Look at it in more than one light. Daylight, spot lighting and ordinary room light all show a diamond differently. A stone that only sparkles under showroom spotlights will spend its life in ordinary light.
  3. Check the inclusions yourself. The certificate plots where inclusions are. Under a loupe, ask to be shown them. What matters is not the clarity grade on paper but whether you can see anything with the naked eye at normal distance.
  4. Compare side by side. The fastest way to understand colour and cut is to see two stones next to each other. One diamond in isolation always looks good. Two diamonds together tell the truth.
  5. Ask about the stone's path. Where it was sourced, who graded it, and what happens between viewing and delivery. A dealer should answer plainly.
