South Africa's factory-direct prices for equivalent GIA- and IGI-certified diamonds are typically lower than prices at Chinese retail jewellery stores. Three compounding factors account for this difference:
- Factory-direct sourcing — no retail chain markup. Diagem buys and sells direct, bypassing the layers of wholesale and retail margin that apply in store-based jewellery retail in China and other markets.
- ZAR/CNY exchange rate — the South African Rand is significantly weaker than the Chinese Yuan. Diamonds priced in ZAR translate to materially lower figures in CNY at current exchange rates.
- 15% VAT refund for foreign visitors — visitors who export their purchase are entitled to a full refund of the 15% South African VAT via the official SARS VAT Refund Administration scheme, reducing the effective purchase price further.
