Know the Difference Before You Choose

The choice between a full and half eternity ring affects how the ring looks, how it sits on the finger, whether it can be resized, and how it wears over years of daily use. Here's what you need to know.

Full Eternity Ring

Diamonds run continuously all the way around the band — a complete, unbroken circle of brilliance. Full eternity rings are the most visually impactful choice: wherever you look at the ring, you see diamonds.

The trade-off is that full eternity rings are very difficult to resize after setting. Getting your ring size exactly right before ordering is essential. They can also be slightly less comfortable for some wearers if the stones beneath the finger create a raised ridge. David will advise on the best stone size and setting profile to minimise this.

Half Eternity Ring

Diamonds are set across the top half of the band, with a plain metal base. Half eternity rings are the more practical everyday choice — easier to resize, more comfortable to wear for extended periods, and generally more durable in daily use because the stones only sit on the top of the finger.

Visually, a half eternity is just as striking face-on as a full eternity. The difference is only apparent when the ring is removed from the finger. For most clients, the flexibility of sizing and the comfort advantage make the half eternity the better long-term choice.

When to wear one

Anniversary, Wedding Band, or Stacking Ring

Diamond eternity rings fit naturally into some of life's most significant moments — and they stack beautifully with other rings you already wear.

Anniversary Gift

The eternity ring has long been the traditional gift for landmark wedding anniversaries — typically the first, fifth, tenth, or twenty-fifth. A ring with one diamond per year of marriage is a popular and deeply personal variation. The continuous circle of stones symbolises enduring love: no beginning, no end.

Wedding Band

Many brides choose a diamond eternity ring as their wedding band rather than a plain gold band. Worn alongside an engagement ring, an eternity band adds sparkle on both sides of the centre stone. David can advise on profile height and width to ensure both rings sit comfortably together.

Stacking Rings

Eternity rings stack beautifully. A combination of a solitaire engagement ring, a diamond eternity band, and a plain gold band creates an elegant and layered look that many South African women currently wear. We can design stacking sets with matching metal and consistent stone sizes for a coherent result.

Setting options

Eternity Ring Setting Styles

The setting determines how secure the diamonds are, how much they sparkle, and how practical the ring is for daily wear.

Claw / Prong Setting

Small prongs grip each stone individually, allowing maximum light entry from all sides. Claw-set eternity rings deliver outstanding brilliance but require slightly more maintenance — prongs should be checked periodically. Best suited to occasional wear or active wearers who are careful with their jewellery.

Channel Setting

Diamonds are set in a continuous channel between two rails of metal. The smooth surface offers excellent protection for the stones and outstanding durability for daily wear. Channel-set eternity rings have a sleek, uninterrupted profile and are one of the most practical choices for active lifestyles.

Pavé / Micro-Pavé

Tiny diamonds are set closely together, held by very small prongs or beads, creating a surface that appears to be paved with diamonds. Pavé eternity rings are incredibly sparkly and create a soft, glittering look. Micro-pavé uses even smaller stones for a refined, delicate finish.

Bezel Setting

Each diamond is individually encircled by a metal rim. Bezel-set eternity rings offer the highest level of diamond protection and a clean, modern aesthetic. Ideal for practical daily wear, particularly for those in occupations where ring snagging is a concern.

Shared Claw (Shared Prong)

Adjacent diamonds share a single prong between them, reducing the amount of metal visible between stones. This creates a more continuous, sparkly appearance than individual prong settings while using less metal. A popular choice for round brilliant eternity rings.

Grain / Bead Setting

Tiny beads of metal are pushed up around each stone to hold it in place. Grain-set eternity rings have a handcrafted, artisanal quality and deliver a subtler, more textural look. Often used for vintage-inspired or unique bespoke designs.

Built for real life

Custom Sizing and Daily Wear Practicality

A ring you wear every day needs to fit perfectly and hold up to real life. We design eternity rings with both considerations in mind from the start.

Getting the sizing right on an eternity ring matters more than on a solitaire, because many eternity styles — particularly full eternity — cannot be resized after the stones are set. We confirm your ring size at the time of order and can work with professional sizing measurements to ensure an accurate fit.

For daily wear, we recommend channel, bezel, or shared-claw settings in platinum or 18ct gold, which offer excellent durability without sacrificing beauty. If you have an active lifestyle, David will advise specifically on which combination best suits your routine.

Budget guidance

What Does a Diamond Eternity Ring Cost in South Africa?

Eternity ring prices depend on the number of stones, total carat weight, stone quality, setting style, and metal choice. Here's a realistic guide.

R12,000 – R35,000

A half eternity band with lab-grown round brilliant diamonds totalling 0.5–1.0ct in E–G colour, VS clarity. Channel or shared-claw setting in 18ct gold. Elegant, certified, and built to last.

R35,000 – R100,000

A full or half eternity band with natural or lab-grown diamonds totalling 1.0–2.0ct. GIA or IGI certified. At this level, the diamond coverage and quality become immediately impressive. Most Diagem eternity rings are crafted in this range.

R100,000+

Premium GIA-certified natural eternity rings with 2.0ct+ total diamond weight, top colour and clarity, in platinum. Often chosen as significant anniversary gifts or high-specification wedding bands. These rings are heirloom pieces.

Diamond Eternity Ring FAQs

What is the difference between a full and half eternity ring?
A full eternity ring has diamonds set all the way around the band — a continuous circle of stones. A half eternity ring has diamonds set across the top half only, with a plain metal base. Full eternity rings deliver maximum sparkle from every angle. Half eternity rings are generally easier to resize and more comfortable for daily wear, as the plain base sits more smoothly against the finger.
Can an eternity ring be resized? +
Half eternity rings can usually be resized because the plain metal base allows standard resizing techniques. Full eternity rings are very difficult or impossible to resize without reworking the setting, because diamonds run all the way around the band. We strongly recommend getting your ring size confirmed before ordering a full eternity ring. David can advise on the best approach for your situation.
What diamond shapes are used in eternity rings? +
Round brilliant cuts are the most popular for eternity rings because the circular shape tiles uniformly around the band. Cushion cuts, princess cuts, and baguettes are also available. Each shape creates a different look — round brilliants maximise sparkle, while baguettes give a sleek, linear elegance.
Are eternity rings suitable for daily wear? +
Absolutely. We design eternity rings for durability as well as beauty. The choice of setting style and metal affects how practical the ring is day-to-day. Bezel and channel settings protect the diamonds better than claw settings and are ideal for active lifestyles. David will advise on the best option for your daily routine.
How much does a diamond eternity ring cost in South Africa? +
Prices depend on the number of stones, their total carat weight, quality, and setting style. A classic half eternity band with lab-grown diamonds can start from around R12,000. Full eternity rings with natural GIA-certified diamonds range from R35,000 to R200,000+. Contact David for a quote based on your specific requirements.
Can I use an eternity ring as a wedding band? +
Yes, many clients choose an eternity ring as their wedding band or wear one alongside a solitaire engagement ring. Eternity rings also stack beautifully. David can advise on sizing, profile, and metal choice to ensure your rings sit well together and are comfortable to wear daily.
